What are the two most important rules that a CIO must follow in order to succeed in the enterprise? Hussein Yahfoufi, vice president of technology & products for eCapital, shares these two:

  1. Understand the corporate vision (larger picture) and how technology helps drive that vision. Then figure out how to push that vision down to your teams to where they understand it enough to be able to create the projects and development efforts needed to march toward that vision.
  2. Know the value to the company of what you are creating. As tech leaders we love to talk about technology, build technology and work on technology, but at the end of the day there is a company that is running and the technology we create has to add value to the company. Building cool and fun technology is not enough; it has to add value to the company.
