In this week's edition of news for CIOs and IT pros, we take another look at the evolving expectations of CIOs in the digital era.
The CIO's role in digital transformation
A new study from Forrester Research indicates that “only a quarter of businesses have a coherent digital strategy to create customer value as a digital business.” In an article for ZDNet, Forrester puts the onus on CIOs to lead their organizations through digital transformation by becoming customer-obsessed. Forrester analyst Sharyn Leaver suggests three things CIOs can do in 2016 to win at digital.
In another article, Michael Krigsman says that adopting a digital mindset is essential to a CIO's survival, and that tolerance for old-school, laggard CIOs is quickly vanishing. He says, “The digital mindset involves a shift from cost-centered thinking to delivering value and innovation. The correct term is actually co-innovation, reflecting the importance of close partnership between IT and the business.” In his article, he discusses how a digital mindset is changing all facets of IT, from strategy and culture to project management.
In an interview with Peter High for Forbes, John Marcante, Enterpriser and CIO of Vanguard, addresses how digital has changed his role. Marcante says, “For us, it is about creating a culture of speed and responsiveness to meet changing business needs. It is about creating a culture of experimentation, of learning, and of iterating your way to a win.”
