Week in Review Blue CIO

In this week's edition of news for CIOs and IT pros, we bring you the latest on cybersecurity in the cloud as well as new challenges for the evolving CIO.

On cloud security

The debate rages on regarding the security of the public cloud for enterprises. Andrew Froehlich provides several reasons why he believes the gap between cloud computing and cloud security is shrinking as more enterprises embrace it, in this InformationWeek article

Mark Van Der Linden, UK Country Manager for Dropbox, argues in CloudTech that the security risk is not in the cloud itself, it's in the shadow IT that inevitably occurs when CIOs are unsuccessful in getting their employees to adopt a cloud solution.

Ultimately, it's up to the CIO to decide whether the cloud is secure enough or not. If you're all in and looking for a good example to follow, Frank Konkel of NextGov features a cloud success story with the Enterprisers Project's own Dr. David A. BrayCIO of the FCC. Kudos!

On Internet of Things security

While we're on the topic of security, cloud computing is not a CIO's only concern as the number of Internet-enabled devices continues to increase – seemingly by the day. Concerns surrounding the Internet of Things were further stoked this week when Nicole Perlroth of the New York Times reported that security research are now successfully hacking into and controlling Internet-ready cars.

In a related article in CIO Magazine, Martyn Williams provides a look at how this threat is being proactively addressed by the Security and Privacy in Your Car Act of 2015. It's just one example of how cybersecurity concerns will rise as our lives become increasingly connected.

New CIO challenges

Contending with new security threats is just one contributing factor to the evolution of the CIO role. IT industry veteran Ginna Raahauge says that it's not just about information these days. As reported by Thor Olavsrud, according to Raahauge, the I in CIO now stands for infrastructure, innovation, integration, and intelligence. She goes on to point out that the search for the right talent to help you achieve all these priorities is a challenge in an of itself.
